By the time Liam reached the last turn in the road four days later, he was filthy, frustrated and exhausted. It had been a hard time out in the wilderness, and he was looking forward to a bit of peace and quiet.

“My bed,” Faolán groaned alongside. “All I need is my bed.”

“And a willing partner,” somebody said.

“Two willing partners,” somebody else added.

Even the bantering was halfhearted. They had just spent one too many nights sleeping on the hard ground and dodging the rain, which was even worse. By the hand of Lugh, he was no flower fairy to thrive on a waterfall in his face. He preferred the nice, dry environs of his house, especially since he now had a very willing wife waiting there for him.

It was the only thing that had gotten him through when the days grew long and muddy, the memory of Orla in that stream the last night he’d been home. He couldn’t help recalling it now, how her body had shone in the faint moonlight, how her hair had tumbled over her lush, high breasts and fallen like silk through his fingers. How her sighs had sounded like music above the chatter of the water. How tight and hot she’d been, as if made just to sheath his cock.

That thought alone was making him hard again. He could hardly wait.

“I hope there’s venison at the banquet tonight,” Faolán said.

Maybe, Liam thought, he was close enough to slip into her mind. Let her know he was coming. Tease her with what to expect. He could almost taste her excitement on his tongue, the anticipation almost better than the act itself.

“I hope the wine barrels are bottomless,” Uaine said, tipping back his waterskin for the last drops.

“I hope Tullia is waiting naked in the road,” Flann said.

Liam hoped Orla was waiting naked in the stream.

Maybe he would suggest it to her while he was still out on the road. Sure, it would give her time to get ready, then, wouldn’t it? He was close enough now. All he had to do was set his mind to it. Find her mind and settle the idea right into it. He was sure he would be able to sneak in under her guard before she knew he was there. Sure, she would be delighted to welcome him.

“You shouldn’t speak of your consort like that!” Uaine snapped.

For a second Liam thought he was talking to him.

“She’s my consort,” Flann said. “I’ll talk of her as I want.”

“Not if a better consort for her comes along.”

By the gleaming balls of Silverhand, Liam thought. Here we go again.

“Enough, you two,” he commanded, losing the link he’d almost established with Orla. “You’ve already bloodied each other’s noses enough for this trip.”

“He has no respect—”

“He has no right—”

“You have no permission to annoy me!” Liam yelled, turning in his saddle. “Have you two always been this juvenile, or is this just the season for it?”

Odd how two of the fiercest fighters in the Coimirceoiri could pout like toddlers.
